  • Working nights

I don't know what boss Sian's up to at the minute - she's in bed all day!! And out all night - me and Flash have been looking after the house when Phil's at work - and Hannah's in college now, so things are a bit boring really.

I got told off yesterday for digging in the veg patch - I was looking for the cat - I could smell it there, and I could smell where it had been digging - I think it left a poo behind! I also got told off for finding knickers again! Or maybe I get told off for eating them? Don't ask! I think I need to get out more :-/

I got a new food bin - big black and orange - that should stop Flash stealing my food - Fat Man!!Typical Lab or what!

  • Lovely morning training

I've just had a lovely morning, training in the sunshine at Harvey's lake. It was so quiet and peaceful up there - all you could hear was the wind blowing through the grasses and reeds - until I barked, and Sian shouted hooray!!

She hid the piggie three times for me altogether. The first time she sent me out to look for it, I thought it was going to be a short one - I must admit I cheated a bit - I was watching her for clues - sometimes she looks excited when I'm close, and she puts her hands behind her back - I know then she's got the ball in her hand ready! But every time I looked at her ready to bark, she walked away. I knew I hadn't smelled the pig really strongly, so it would have been wrong to bark, so I carried on looking - and sniffing - until I found it - what a stinker!!! I barked straight away then, and she was very pleased!
I managed to lose the ball though - I think I probably buried it in the mud I was so excited to get it! Oops!

We went back to get another ball, and I waited in the car until Sian had hidden it again. This time, I could smell it as soon as I got out of the car, and was desperate to go and find it and get the ball to play with, but she wouldn't let me until I had my jacket on. I went a bit beserk that time - running all over the place, but I found it soon enough and got the ball when I barked!

The third time, I found it easy enough, but I got a bit distracted, and I told Sian when I found the lead that she's got attached to the tube - she throws it out on that so she can get it further out - and doesn't get water over the top of her wellies! Anyway, I found the lead and barked, but she wouldn't give me the ball. She sent me on to find the stink itself, and when I got it, I barked at her and she gave me the ball - you'll never believe it - I lost that ball as well! We had to pack it in then because we had no more green balls left! It was a good day anyway, lovely sunny morning.

Anyone got any spare old tennis balls???

  • Training

We went up to Harvey's lake last evening - Flash and Ellie came too, and we all had a run around and went across the dam to the other side - Ellie's so funny - she just goes off and does her own thing! She's just crazy about water and exploring it!

We all went back in the car then, and Sian and Phil took the stinker out, and then came back for me. I could smell it a long way off - that's the easy bit - it's finding it that's harder - you have to find where the smell is strongest, so you do that by sort of going across the wind if you know what I mean. When you cross the wind, you find out where the smell comes from, and you then cross back, until you get to where it gets strongest. Its a bit like a cone of smell that comes from whatever you're looking for. Flash says that's the same as he does but he doesn't do it on water.
Anyway when you get to where the smell is strongest, you have to tell the Boss - I'm only learning this game, so I sometimes forget to tell her straight away. She usually knows when I've found it even when I don't bark at her - yesterday, I was just swimming round and round and then coming out to her. I thought she was going to walk away and not give me the ball, so then I remembered I had to bark at her, and I got the ball - I only do this so I can play with the ball - I love it!!!

It went dark while I was looking for the smell the second time, and I forgot to tell Boss, so that wasn't so good. Because of that I think she's planning to take me out training again today. It's Nant Peris Fair today, so we might go to that this afternoon. Problem with training at weekends is that it's quite busy, and we haven't found ourselves a nice quiet lake yet - if you know of one we can use, just leave me a message. We need one that isn't used for people's water, and that's reasonably close to a road.

  • Today's walk at Rainbow Lake, Sychnant Pass

Went for a walk to Rainbow Lake this morning - we were hoping to see Bobby up there, but he wasn't there. There were lots of other dogs - Sian was talking to a lady who trains dogs, and they were having a chat about clickers and things. She had a collie called Twix and a lovely golden retriever - not sure what that dog's name was, it wasn't as playful as Twix. Twix said she was learning to put her paw over her face when her boss said "Shy" - I can just see it happening, you know what, Sian will try to teach me to do it now. Never mind, I do like a challenge - if I ever have to do talks and things like that, it's handy to have a trick! Especially a cute one like that.

We then went down to the lake, which was very muddy considering how much rain we've had. There were two border collies there - we thought they were farm dogs - they were in the lake, and very possessive - we couldn't go into the lake - they wouldn't let us!! Anyway, a bit later, a man came down from the hill and they went with him. They hadn't come from the farm at all. I get a bit scared of loose border collies - they can be a bit scary - I didn't show I was scared, but I just copied Ellie and pretended to ignore them - they were showing their teeth at Flash - that's not really very friendly, is it.

Sian was supposed to be working tonight, but the shift got cancelled, so I think as it's a nice day, we might go and do some pigging - I hope so, I like working!

I'll tell you all about it later if we go .

  • Ramblings ...

Boring day, Sian and Hannah went to get Hannah's things from the college that's too far away, so us dogs had a quick walk this morning and have been home all day until Phil came home. After some wrestling, we just chilled and chatted about things - strange the things we talk about when there are no humans around

... tails - why do dogs chase them - none of the others can catch theirs - Hez's tail is too short - she's only got two thirds of hers, but she's too boring to chase her tail. Flash wouldn't even think of it. I can catch mine - no bother at all, but then I don't know what to do with it. I just stand there with it in my mouth, wondering why I did that!

...television - how on earth do the people get in there - it's only thin, but I've just been watching boys playing football - I can't get in there to play with them, the ball doesn't come out, but I can see it - very strange. Phil said I had to ask if people can guess which football team I support !

...knickers - why do people get so cross at me when I chew knickers. I don't see it as a problem, but hey ho.

... why does Flash fart so much ...

... why do people keep fish in a tank? ...

Going for a walk now, have fun. Answers on a postcard ...

  • Hair!

Boss Sian has been to see Gaynor the Hairdresser this morning, smells funny, but looks tidy. She brought a bag of hair for me - Sian said that she's going to put it in with the piggy and so get some human smells mixed in with the smelly pig smell. She said that she had to have other people's hair, not Sian's own, otherwise I'd end up finding Sian every time - hmmm, I have no trouble finding my mum!

  • The plan ...

I'm training to be a Drowned Victim Search Dog - not a very cuddly job title, I'm afraid - some people think I should be called a Water Search Dog, so I'm compromising. DVSD is what I'll be doing though. My boss Sian is training me, helped by Phil, who's already trained 4 air scenting search dogs, two of whom qualified - Jet, who was a famous dog - was on the telly, had awards, won prizes and found lots of people. Secretly he was very good at finding "courting couples" - I'm not allowed to say what they were really doing! His current dog is my mate Flash, who has found 2 people so far - he gets a bone, and Phil gets a steak every time they find someone, so it's worth doing.

Anyway, Sian took me to Northern Ireland in June this year to a course run by Neil Powell and John Sjoberg. These two chaps have been training and working search dogs, particularly water search dogs for many years. Neil has trained 4 dogs for water search so he really knows what he's doing, and me and Sian are learning lots from him - and I'm sure we're going to learn loads more - he's the Master! Phil came along because he's going to be helping Sian train me - it's not something she can do on her own, particularly as she hasn't trained a dog before me - well, only Ellie, and she doesn't count!! Harold came along too, to see what it's all about.

Apart from the obedience and stock training, which all the dogs have to do before they're accepted for training, I had to learn to bark when I was told to! I was never much of a talker, but Neil showed Sian how to use the ball, and get me so frustrated that I made a noise. When I did that, she had to say "speak", and give me the ball straight away. Neil had to tell Sian a few times that she was too slow giving me the reward - quite right too!! Eventually I learned that if I spoke, i would get the ball, and that's been the start of BIG STUFF!
I also had to learn which smell I was looking for. All the other SARDA dogs look for people smells, fresh, live people smells. Iain Nic's Mij and Gwen's Rolf look for particular people, and then trail that particular person's smell until they find them, or the smell runs out. They're really useful dogs, particularly in places where you get lots of other people.

Learning the smell is called "imprinting", and I did some of that in Ireland. Most of it has been done here though. It's where you get a ball every time you find the particular smell. The first ones were really easy - Flash told me that it's meant to be easy to start with because they have to make sure you get the reward! How easy peasy is that! When you know what the smell is, they make it harder, burying it, making fake burials, and then putting it in water!!

I'm just about at the stage where I bark when I find the stinker, and I get the ball! Until this last weekend's training, I was getting the ball every time I found it, and then I had to speak, but now, I get the ball when I tell Sian I've found it! She certainly seemed happy with what we were doing on Sunday though!

I can't wait to see what comes next, and where the boat comes in ...

  • More photos

    watching where she\'s steering me!

This is when we were doing the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course - me, Sian and Phil, in the boat here with Chris, from the Conwy School of Yachting. Chris and Casey are my big mates - they love me and Flash coming to the office and having a good sniff around. We haven't done a sprinkle there at all, which is probably a good thing. Sian and Phil had to do the Powerboat course, because that's one of the basic things that the human part of the team need - I have the nose and the skill, they're sorting the boat, which will be the legs of the partnership. ;)

Anyway, Chris very kindly let us have a BOGOF - buy one get one free, and we went in the holidays to do this. It was good fun, apart from the time when it got very bouncy when they were out in Conwy Bay, throwing the man overboard! I lay down at Sian's feet, not that I felt sick or anything like that y'know :-/ but I felt much better when we were back on smooth water again! I was glad to hear that I won't be searching in water that rough! Something called wave slap - not sure what that is, but it's not good for sniffing with!

Anyway, Chris and Casey have been very kind and generous to us, and we love them! check them out at www.conwy-yachting.com

  • Back again - more beginning!

ok I'm back again! Tom had no snacks for me, gutted. While he was here, Fat Flash raided my food bag - so he didn't get much tea! He's always doing that! We get Oscar's food - I don't think Oscar wants it ... kidding - Oscar sponsor the SARDA qualified dogs - they get free food! Can you believe it! I get Oscars because my mum pays for it, because when I'm qualified, I'll get it for nothing!! I still don't get fat on it though!

Sian's mum came round then, and Flash kept on farting - hmmmm,Labradors eh!! How rude!
She had some gossip for mum and Hannah - Gaynor's having a baby - I don't know what that means, but they both couldn't believe it, but said it was lovely news. I think Gaynor does their grooming.

It certainly cheered Hannah up a bit - she's sad at the moment - I tried to cuddle her this morning in the car. That ratbag Liam - he's the one who had the wolf Sky - some of you might have heard of her - shudder - I still get nightmares about her!! He's been two or even three timing Hannah for months - if I ever see him again, I'll bite him; Sian said she'd chop a bit of him off and leave it to rot for me (it's probably rotten already Liam :##)- put it in the tub with the piggies, and I can have real human bits to find!!! I'm not sure that's allowed, even with the Animal By-products regulations, but the sentiment is there! Love you hannah!:DD

Anyway, I was going to explain to you why I'm down as a 13 year old on my profile - its because you have to be 13 to do a blog - I guess I'm nearly 13 in human years - I'm 15 months old now. Big enough to bark and growl!!

I'm going to have a nap now, I had a big big swim on Penmaenmawr beach this afternoon while Hannah was riding Bex - I think sian was testing me to see if I'd bark at her - She was really pleased at the weekend in Smelt Mill (the Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team base) when I was barking every time I found a piggie she'd hidden. It was such hard work - usually up to now I've only had to do about 4 searches, but this weekend I did about 11 or 12 on the Saturday then another 9 on the Sunday. Good work though! Next time, I'll tell you more about my training. Night night, ZZZZZ time

  • The Beginning!

Hiya, and big woofs and licks to everyone!
My name's Cadi, and I'm a trainee water search dog with SARDA Wales. I live with another search dog called Flash, who used to write a blog while he was training, but now that he's qualified, he doesn't bother - I think the last entry was the day I arrived - and now he's just too busy entertaining me!!!

I'm a Springer Spaniel - stringy spaniel Flash calls me - ok so I'm thin, and I struggle to put any weight on - even though I'm constantly wet, and cold, and I have to wear a warm fleecy rug after I've been training!
I'm 15months old now, and I started off being Sharon's dog, living with Williams, who was then an 11 year old Labradorian. He was lovely, but he didn't want to play with me, and he didn't like it when I used to hang off his ears. Anyway, he got a bit grumpy, and because he was the old dog, my now boss Sian said she'd have me for a month, and here I am - nearly a year later!

I think I've been hard work - if you've ever tried to get a Spanx through the SARDA obedience test you'll know what I mean - Sian had to jump on me, and growl at me but we got there in the end - she wrote a book full of notes about my obedience training - when I find them I'll chew it all up, because she wasn't nice about me - but we got there in the end - much to some people's (Kev) surprise!! The other SARDA dogs have to be trained not to go near sheep - I had to be trained not to go near ducks as well! I'm really good now though.

Sian had me because she wanted to train me to find people who've drowned in water, ok, a bit gruesome, but someone has to do it, and she thought I'd be good at it. When she first got me she got in touch with Neil in northern Ireland to ask how to get started. He - wise man - told her to get me to play with the ball, so that I'd be obsessed with it, and then get me to find it. She did this, and meanie, she never let me play with it unless she was with me, and I got totally obsessed with the ball - a little green fluffy tennis ball - I love it.

Anyway, my big brother (or whatever - maybe uncle) Tom has just arrived and I've got to stop typing - he's a chef, and he might have some snacks for me.

    Chat later xxx
